Matilde crossed her arms and glared at the night passing beyond the wide observation windows. “I ain’t getting away, am I? I’m stuck with you.”

“I’m not your warden.” Bartholomew rested his forearms upon his knees and interlaced his fingers. “But I can’t help you if you run away from me.”

She went to a window. “I think the monsters want you, not me.”
